Holy Week Scripture Reading Plan

This year I am journaling in my spiral Psalms Bible. I am calling it “Psalms through the Seasons.” I do hope to have a plan together by the end of the year using what I have been working through myself over the past few months.

Normally for Holy Week I focus on reading passages in the gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, that reflect the events leading up to Jesus' death on the cross and resurrection. I thought it would be neat to instead journal in Psalms to go along with my Psalms through the Seasons series.

Palm Sunday: Psalm 118

“Lord, save us! Lord, grant us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.” (Psalm 118:25-26)

Our pastor referenced Psalm 118:26 in his Palm Sunday sermon on Sunday. This is the verse the people shout as Jesus is entering the Holy City on a donkey in Luke 19:38. The word “Hosanna” means “Save us, Lord.” I made a whole YouTube video you can watch where I explain more about Psalm 118 and Palm Sunday. Even though Sunday is past, it is never too late to spend time journaling and reflecting on Palm Sunday. Click below to watch my process video.

Good Friday: Psalm 22

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?” (Psalm 22:1)

One of the phrases Jesus says on the cross in Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34 comes from Psalm 22. This is a Psalm of David, but there are many references in this Psalm that foreshadow Jesus' death on the cross, including his blood being poured out and the soldiers casting lots for his clothing. It is amazing how so much of the Old Testament is foreshadowing Jesus' death and resurrection. Psalm 22 is heavy, but important to read and reflect on.

Easter Sunday: Psalm 150

“Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.” (Psalm 150:1-2)

As I was reflecting on what Psalm to use for Easter Sunday, I thought about the last Psalm that is so full of praise. Easter Sunday is a time of celebrating the resurrection of Jesus. There's no better reason to praise the Lord than that! I cannot wait to sit down at my desk and film this last video in my Holy Week series. I plan to share that on next Monday, April 6.
