12 Things to Do in the Winter

Winter can be a difficult season for many. This year I am determined to celebrate and romanticize this cold, dreary season because it is the season the Lord has made! He calls me to rejoice and be glad in it.

Here are 12 things you can do in the winter.

1) Open God’s Word: If this is the only thing you do on this list, then you’re winning! Opening God’s Word is the best thing you can do each day. Maybe start a new Bible reading plan for the new year. Or you could get a new devotion book you want to use for the winter. God wants to speak to you through His Word. Winter is a cozy time to spend curled up reading the Bible. The beginning of the year is also a great time to set good faith habits on your walk with the Lord. I have winter Bible study notebooks available! Click here to check them out.

2) Wear sheepskin slippers: Winter is a time to stay bundled up and warm. Polyester slippers were making my feet itch, so I made the swap to natural sheepskin slippers. They are SO cozy and warm and a wonderful natural fiber. I got mine from East Perry. You can also find a few options on Amazon for wool or sheepskin slippers. Here’s one option (wool). Here’s another option (sheepskin).

3) Go on walks in the cold and bundle up: The weather makes me want to stay inside all day, especially living in Oregon where it is rainy and dreary, but I am determined to go on a walk every day this year. Even if it is a short one! I always text my husband a photo when I’m done. :)

4) Start a puzzle: I am working on having more tech-free evenings, especially in the winter. Puzzling is a great way to have a fun activity to do that does not involve screens. I love getting puzzles from Goodwill. You can also get cute winter-themed puzzles on Amazon. Here’s a fun and cute scene that would be a great one to work through this winter. For Christmas we got a puzzle table, which makes it easy to move the puzzle when we need to use our kitchen table.

Here’s our puzzle table and the fun winter puzzle we found at Goodwill.

5) Pray for the season ahead: I highly encourage you to start each day, week, month, season, and project in prayer. God’s Word says to pray all the time and for every occasion! Take time to pause and pray for the season of winter. Ask God to help you see Him at work in the dark season. I have a winter gratitude and prayer journal coming out soon on Amazon, and a coordinating printable. Stay tuned for those tools!

6) Invest in cozy candlelight: Nights are dark so early during the winter, which is why I love using candlelight instead of harsh overhead LED lights. My favorites are the Bluecorn Beesewax taper candles. Push them into a cute candle holder and you have cozy light and a beautiful decoration. You can also make your own candles! I picked up THIS KIT during an Amazon Prime Day sale last year. My husband and I made candles to gift at Christmas, but we also made some for our home that we have been burning. It was fun to work on a new project together and have a beautiful result.

7) Host people at your home: Winter can be a season where you want to retreat and be alone, but it is the perfect time to push away that urge and invite people over to your home for a meal! Keep it simple and order pizza or try a new recipe together. The point is to gather, pray, host, and share the love of the Lord through hospitality. Pray and ask God who He wants you to have over for a meal. Release perfectionism, and just invite them. You never know what He is going to do in and through that invitation.

We love having people over for meals. Laughter, tears, and great conversation happen around the table.

8) Start a declutter box: Winter is a great time to work on decluttering your home. For me, decluttering projects are pretty overwhelming. Instead of trying to declutter everything at once, start a box. When you see an item in your home that you’re not using anymore, put it in the declutter box. This way you can tackle the project little by little as you go throughout your day.

9) Try a new craft/creative project: This January I tried a new craft of making journal charms. I am obsessed. It was so fun to try something new. I have a blog post where I share instructions and supplies. I also have THIS KIT in my Etsy shop that will help you make DIY journal charms. You can also CLICK HERE to get premade journal charms by me! I designed 10 different ones. The point of this is to get creative in a new way.

Here are some of the journal charms I’ve made!

10) Buy a 100% cotton blanket: Winter is the best time to be curled up on the couch. Instead of wrapping yourself in a polyester plastic blanket, try picking up a 100% cotton one instead! Your nervous system will thank you. I have THIS ONE from Amazon that my husband got me several years ago. I have been wanting a second 100% cotton blanket. We were at TJ Maxx the other day, and I found a cute one with bows and hearts on it. While most of the blankets at stores like that are polyester or acrylic (aka plastic), you can sometimes find a good cotton one!

Here’s the cozy TJ Maxx blanket with my morning mocha.

11) Digital declutter: Set aside a few minutes a day to go through your phone, emails, and computer. Delete photos you don’t need anymore, delete old emails that are not necessary to hold onto, delete downloads in your computer or file them into folders. It will feel SO good to do a digital reset and declutter this winter.

12) Stay hydrated: It is easy to drink more liquids during the summer when it’s hot outside, but I can find myself going all day without drinking anything during the winter! I have really been loving the Cure electrolyte mixes. I also love sipping on tea during the winter! My current favorite is this dandelion mocha mint tea. It tastes delicious, and dandelion has a lot of great health benefits. You can find all my favorite drink items on Amazon by clicking here and checking out this idea list.

I love adding tinctures to my morning mocha! Check out Subluna for herbal tinctures. I’ve been adding chill pill, milky oats, and blue vervain into my morning drinks to help with stress and nervous system support.

Bonus tip: I cannot believe I forgot to add this one to the list! The bonus tip is to spend time this winter journaling. I love cozying up by the fireplace, or heading to Starbucks to spend time in my journals reflecting. I have been working on creative writing for FUN this year. I made winter guided journals that have prompts on each page. I also have my Goodbye 2025 Hello 2026 year end reflection journals, and my word of the year journals. I have been loving spending winter curled up writing!

I pray these ideas on things to do this winter encourage you. Even in a dark season, find ways to fill your day and mind with joy and happiness.
